Dendra, a UK company, is aiming to plant 500 billion trees by 2060 using AI and drones. Currently, we are loosing 27 football fields of forest per minute because of the deforestation. Using drones to plant trees will be very beneficial because they can plant 120 seedpods per minute.

According to the UK tech company Dendra, one drone can plant two trees per second, which is an excellent way to re-green the Earth. Four hundred teams of two drone operators, with ten drones per group, are enough to plant around 10 billion trees every year. This new method of planting trees is much cheaper than the traditional way of planting by hand.

The targets are hard to reach places whereby 2060 the company is going to plant 500 billion trees.

“We came up with this idea to use digital Intelligence and re-green the planet. We are working hard together with a team of passionate plant scientists, drone operators, engineers to turn this idea into reality.”, said the CEO of Dendra Systems, Susan Graham.

How can drones plant seeds?

First, we identify the replanting areas by using drone collected data and satellite photos. Then the planting drones that are loaded with germinated seed and nutrients are sent up to the skies. Finally, when the drones are in a position, they use pressured air to send the seeds into the ground. Once in the field, the seedpods start to grow when they come in contact with water.

The company estimates that using this technology will restore forests 150 times faster than planting by hand. And what’s most important it would be ten times cheaper.

“We are going to be able to plant tens of billions of trees each year, and we will be able to see the restored ecosystems from outer space,” said Graham.

According to WWF, around 75.000 square kilometers of forest are lost per year due to deforestation.

“There is one old saying which says, the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, and the second-best time is right now, ” added Graham.
