Bus terminal; a shelter for stray dogs
Employees at the Barreirinha bus terminal in Brazil came up with an idea to provide food and shelter for a few local stray dogs. The employees provided beds for the dogs as well, which were made out of tires covered in blankets. They gave names to the dogs: Pitoco, Max, and Zoinho.
A local politician and an animal lover Fabiane Rosa saluted their selfless act, and wrote on Facebook:
Congratulations to the employees for doing such a noble deed. Many companies in Curitiba could follow their example. Perhaps the shelter is not ideal, but still, some people show goodwill for looking after the pets.
Stray dogs in the U.S. are a big problem.
It is believed that there are approximately 500 million stray dogs in the world. About 3.3 million dogs enter shelters in the U.S. 670,000 of those are still being euthanized because there is no space and funding in a shelter.
Most of the dogs live without family to care for them, and in most situations, they live with diseases and infections with no means of treatment. Dogs transmit up to 99 percent of rabies to humans through scratches and bites. Rabies is preventable with vaccination, but stray dogs do not receive such treatment.
How everyone can help keep dogs off the street
Adopt or foster
If you are planning to have a furry member in your family, then the best option is to adopt a pet from your local animal shelter instead of buying it from a breeder.
But if you are not in a position to provide long term accommodation for a pet, you might consider fostering. You can help provide a warm home for stray pets until some family is found that is ready to adopt the animals permanently.
Neuter/spay your dog
The best way is to prevent unexpected litters from minimizing the problem of stray pets. Just make sure your cats and dogs are neutered or spayed, and when they are outside, monitor them always.
