Trees can reveal to us what has happened in the past, or give us some interesting facts. Their rings are speaking much more than how old the tree is, but they can say many things about the climate in a precise year. Many exams have been done to the trees, and these rings can give us information as if the winter was wet or whether there were hurricanes, fires, or other disasters.

In Ngawha, placed on New Zealand’s North Island, people have found an ancient tree that has a record of a reversal of Earth’s magnetic field. The tree is known under the name Agathis australis (Māori name Kauri), and it was discovered in an excavation work for the enlargement of a geothermal power plant.

Ngāwhā Generation is a subsidiary of Northland power wholesaler Top Energy. It agreed to give the tree back to iwi on the agreement of scientists, so they can make as much as examinations possible, and get a lot of information.

The tree was found buried in 26 feet of soil. The proportions are 8 feet in diameter and 65 feet in length. The results of the carbon dating say that the duration of the tree’s life reached 1,500 years, and it originated from 41,000 and 42,500 years ago.

Undoubtedly, we will have increased radiation, and it will take out satellites, and it may take out many other communication infrastructures.

In his statement, Turney explained why this tree is so essential for us on Earth. According to him, the tree is enormous and lonely, which lived in a highly remarkable period in the past. That period is when the Earth’s magnetic field flipped approximately 42,000 years ago, and that time in history is known as Laschamp Excursion.

It is proved with evidence that in the past 83 million years, 183 magnetic reversals have happened. Only one reversal to be fully complete takes 7,000 years.

Monika Korte is the scientific director of the Niemegk Geomagnetic Observatory at GFZ Potsdam in Germany, and she also explained her attitude for this surprise.

They said that the flip is not a sudden one, but it is a time-consuming process, where the field strength is weakened, the field becomes complex and should show more than two poles, next it builds up in intensity and aligns in the opposite direction.

Moreover, NASA said that a magnetic field reversal happens at undefined intervals. Something strange is that in the past 20 million years, they occurred in a specific pattern, every 200,000 to 300,000 years.

According to the records, the previous time when a magnetic reversal has happened was 780,000 years ago.

Recently was announced that the magnetic north pole had moved, and they were surprised. For this purpose, researchers had to update the World Magnetic Model-WMM. WMM is a portrayal of Earth’s magnetic field. It has been used for navigation by the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.K. Ministry of Defense, and civilian system, so it is essential to know where the northern and southern magnetic poles are located.

Turney concluded that because of the Earth’s magnetic field that has a huge effect on the radiocarbon creation in the upper atmosphere, the surveys’ newest results would provide them to analyze the magnitude and rate of change when the magnetic field reverses next time.
